Are my expectations too high???

Recently on my way back from Singapore after the Malaysia-Singapore First Aid & Home Nursing Competition, we stopped at KL Sentral for our train back to Ipoh. Then my members "belanja" me. Ask me to go through palm reading using this machine called "The Mouth of Truth". Honestly, I am not a believer. But it made my mind ponder what the list says about my self.

After a while a piece of paper pop-out.

The list mentions the following :
- You have a strong constitution and can work hard.
- You are gifted with excellent critical capacities.
- You don't allow yourself to be swayed by circumstances.
- You often feel uncomfortable with people and don't know how to cultivate friendships or lasting relationships.
- As long as you can achieve your ambitions you don't care about anyone else's feelings.
- Your childhood longings will soon be satisfied.

The 5th. line made me wonder. Are my expectations too high? Have I pressured my members? Did I put my ambitions first?

My standards are high. I do agree. It's not for my personal gain but to improve yourselves. If you fail I won't blame you, but blame myself because I have not done enough to make you better. I know you feel pressured because you don't want to disappoint me. But believe me, that I won't get angry because you fail, but I will be disappointed if you give up!

My Ambitions? Do I have one? I was asking myself, what will I gain? End of the day I think it is satisfaction. That is what I have gained. And the most important thing of them all is experience and memories which I will treasure it until the day I die.

So to my members who read my blog. This is what I got to say to you:

The only way we improve ourselves is to learn from your mistakes, quickly realize it and correct them fast. Once you get it right, don't be comfortable with your achievement but continue to strive to improve. The trouble with people today is they become too comfortable and get carried away with their success.

Soon you will be leaders. None of us are born leaders. Again you will feel pressured because you want to set a benchmark and do better then the previous leaders. It's good that you want to do better but that's not important if you ask me. Look at the problems that need urgent attention. Prioritize your projects to make sure you're working on what's truly important instead of getting caught up in minor things. Always put your priorities right. Never let personal feelings get in the way when making decisions.

It is like building a house. Your walls and foundation need to be strong. Without a strong foundation and walls, the roof will collapse and if you are in that house you might get injured badly and there might not be any fast recovery.

Be sensitive to your surrounding. You can't make everyone happy but at least try to make everyone agree and understand your ideas and plans. Issues can always be talked out. The best way to resolve a problem/issue is to bring all parties together and talk over it. Trash it all out. End of the day settle everything at that table and leave it there, don't bring it back and discuss it outside.

As there is a Chinese saying "Pour Cold Water". There are people of such around us, they tend to give all types of reasons just to make you to withdraw your ideas and determination. Ignore this type of people, either they follow the crowd or they will be left behind. Sooner or later they will join the crowd because they won't want to be left behind.

When there are leaders, there will be followers. For the followers, don't always be the follower. You can always speak up and give your opinions. What I want my members to know is, don't be afraid to voice out. Everyday I share my experience with you and at the same time I learn something new from you.

Sometimes, I share my views and experiences but it does not mean you literally accept what I got to say. I leave it to you to decide. If you use your judgment right, then you will make a wise choice but if you don't, you will have to learn your lesson through the hard way. That is part of training. and learning.

Finally, your studies and parents are the most important things. Always put them first. I know your parents always worry about your studies. If you don't do well in your studies, they will not allow your to be involved actively in St. John. Remember all the training we provide is not just to be used when there is an emergency, it can also be used in any other day to day situation.

When you want to play, you play. When you want to learn, you learn. Sometimes take a break and give yourself a pat on your back for a job well done. But don't allow success to make your forget yourself. Be humble and be yourself.

Time is short, so don't waste time.

Are my expectation too high for you ???

St. John Day - 24 June

This is the First time, I had many messages from my fellow comrades from St. John Ambulance wishing me Happy St. John's Day. But I believe many don't really know why we celebrate St. John's Day.

Some people think St. John's Day is organized because of Flag Day. Anyway, I think it is time, I wish to clear the misconception. St. John is the patron saint of St. John Ambulance and this how it got it's name. Below is some info about our patron saint.

St. John the Baptist
Feastday: June 24

St. John the Baptist
St. John the Baptist

John the Baptist was the son of Zachary, a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim southwest of Jerusalem after the Angel Gabriel had told Zachary that his wife would bear a child even though she was an old woman. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until about A.D. 27. When he was thirty, he began to preach on the banks of the Jordan against the evils of the times and called men to penance and baptism "for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand". He attracted large crowds, and when Christ came to him, John recognized Him as the Messiah and baptized Him, saying, "It is I who need baptism from You". When Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching in the Jordan valley. Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea when John denounced his adultrous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias, who asked for his head at the instigation of her mother. John inspired many of his followers to follow Christ when he designated Him "the Lamb of God," among them Andrew and John, who came to know Christ through John's preaching. John is presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of the Messiah. His feast day is June 24th and the feast for his beheading is August 29th.

Flag Day is one of the many activities which we The St. John Ambulance organize. Apart from that we also organize at the Area / State Levels community service activities such as Blood Donation Drives, Mass CPR Program, Exhibitions, Cadet Enrollment Ceremony etc.

I know I am very late in writing this info but St. John Day is celebrated for one whole month until 24 July. On St. John which was on 24 June normally members in school will raise the St. John Flag and will be in Full Uniform. You can even organize First Aid Awareness Campaigns , Health Awareness Campaigns, etc. for the teachers and students in your school.

We have served and existed in Malaysia for 101 years for the Service of Mankind. Let us continue to serve and do more for the society.

Happy St. John's Day my dear friends - First in First Aid

What has happen to the world!

On Thursday, I went to the Orthopedic Operation Theater, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh, I was surprised to see a few police officers waiting outside the entrance of the OT. Normally there will only be around 2 officers (if the patient is a criminal) but this time I saw more.

Anyway as I walked into the airlock area, I met some of the staff and asked why so many police present in and outside. The attendant told me "Ada kes bunuh" - "there is a murder case". I asked him back "What ! In the OT" . He replied "No", the murderer. Then the airlock door opened and came a young, good looking male, who is fair in complexion and calm looking being trolleyed out of the recovery area.

The I over heard, the police officer say "...3 orang dia bunuh" - "he murdered 3 people". Then I remembered watching the midnight news on tv.

The accused was cuffed to the trolley. He underwent a surgery, noticed stitches on his shoulder bones (clavicle). He looked calm and not a little fear or regret for what he has done can be seen. Or maybe due to the anesthesia given, he looked cool and calm!

He was un-cuffed and latter transferred onto another trolley to be brought to the ward. Noticed the linen was covered with blood. As he was being wheeled out from the airlock area, I was recalling back the news I saw the previous night. I remembered there were 2 adults and a child. How pity that a child had been murdered brutally and without mercy.

I over heard the staff talking saying that the accused was high on drugs, did not know what he did! He found the victims hiding in the toilet and he stabbed them in the toilet. Multiple stab wound was found on the victims.

Latter as he was trying to escape, he was caught and tied to a lamp post. I would not be surprised that he was given a good beating before he was handed over to the authority as I could see multiple bruising. Anyway he deserves it !

According to them, he is a former staff of Secret Recipe and got retrenched. - So after getting retrenched, I think he got himself a new job - robbing people and now it got him into trouble!

Anyway I met my Dr friend and we were chatting about the murder case. He will be going away to further his studies and now he worried to leave behind his wife and kids. Everyday when we see the news, there is murder, rape, robbery, etc.

I asked him, did they give the accused any anesthesia while he underwent the minor surgery. He told me yes, out of fear he might become aggressive.

In my mind, if I was the Dr. I would have strapped him onto the OT Table, and did the surgery without giving him any anesthesia. I would have given him, a feel of pain ! But they did not do it, and luckily I am not a Dr.

As I walked back to my car, I was angry and was thinking what has happen to the world! What has happen to our country? Has our education system failed? Is the morale and religious teaching not enough? Didn't his parents tell him the difference of right and wrong? How can a human being have the intention to hurt another fellow human being, a child and a mother, stab them to death.

My mind started to worry not only for my family members and loved ones safety but also for my members in SJAM. Are they safe ? Have we done enough to protect them ?

The accused looked innocent and don't even look like a drug addict. Can we TRUST the people we have appointed (to train and educate) to care for our members safety and welfare? So far nothing happen. But when it happens, it will be to late!

Improving Training

"There is no day without training"
(Tiada hari tanpa latihan - PULAPOL)

This sentence was on one of the walls in PULAPOL (Pusat Latihan Polis) Police Training Center, Jalan Semarak, KL. It reminded me that, without daily training and for me to continue to improve myself, I will need to train every time so that the knowledge and skills will always be remembered.

Even someone who I highly look upon and respect (The late Tn. Guru) told me this during a OTC in 2001. He reminded me that, to be able to lead others we must train ourselves and training should not stop just because we become an officer. We will need to gain new skills and knowledge so that we will be able to share and lead others. And when we make a mistake, quickly change and learn from that mistake. Yes, I make mistake, I am not perfect.

So what will I do to improve myself and my members?

Apart from all those lectures and talks (I know some are bored hearing my lectures; BUY Original) I would get them the right tool and equipments.

Divisions should consider investing money in Manikin, teaching aids, etc. I have come accross members who don't even know how to open a stretcher. Committee just show the member but don't allow the members to try opening, preparing and how to use a stretcher. Why ? Scared the stretcher get spoilt.

And when comes an emergency, the poor member does not know what to do! It's better to show and allow hand's on, rather then during emergency, they try opening a stretcher and damage it. You might say, stretcher only mah! So easy!Try opening the new/brand new double fold stretcher. And you will know how difficult it is to open a stretcher especially the hinges. And when you fold if you are not careful. The center part of the canvas get torn. Price of a Double Fold Stretcher : Less than RM 350.00 with a carrying case. You can always request funds from the school because some schools have allocation to buy First Aid equipments.

Divisions also should consider getting a CPR Manikin, how do you expect a member to practice CPR ? If you have 100 members, you should consider at least 2 units. Because if you just have one, the manikin might get retired very early.A manikin will probably cost less than RM 1000.00. I was told by some suppliers that there are new manikins for CPR as the position of the compression has changed. So before you buy, make sure you get the latest type.

Then there is the Choking Manikin. It is costly, the last time I checked the price it cost about RM 3,200.00 (2007).
This another equipment that will be handy for training purpose.

If your division is loaded or some generous donor would like to donate but don't know what to donate. It will be probably one good idea to invest in a Simulation Manikin

This manikin will become handy during simulation. The manikin above is a Resusci Anne which can be used for CPR Training. The limbs can be assembled and detached for Simulation Training.

Other equipments probably you can invest on the C-Collar which I mentioned in my previous post.

Maybe I will mention to you in my next posting, other optional product in delivering better service, which is our First Aid Service.

Anyway you can have all the equipments (hardaware), but end of the day having them alone will not improve training and knowledge. You will need to ensure that you have the right software (trainers). Not forgetting responsible people to care for the equipments and proper usage. (Another interesting topic, I should blog about , maintenance!)

The Star Newspaper Article

No help for St John’s ambulance vehicle

ON my way to work on my motorcycle, I saw a St John’s Ambulance vehicle broke down in the middle of the Penang Bridge in the inner lane and it was causing a traffic jam.

I pulled over my motorcycle and asked the driver what’s wrong with the vehicle.

He told me that the vehicle was jerking and suddenly the engine was off.

I knew that it must be a major problem, so I offered to push the vehicle to the unused third lane.

He got in to steer the vehicle and I was left alone to push. I stopped the cars on both lanes and started to push the vehicle.

I was struggling as it was steep towards the middle span.

I waved for assistance but they just drove past after slowing down for awhile but none came over to help.

I feel sad that none came over to help push the ambulance vehicle as it could one day be rushing to save the lives of their loved ones.

EDWIN JOACHIM,

Penang.
