Night 2009 held recently at Methodist College Kuala
Lumpur.

STUDENTS of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) continue to achieve excellent results as shown in the Edexcel GCE, A-Level June 2009 examination. Ding Zu Ning earned the distinction of being placed “top six in the world” for mathematics while Jonathan Chew Chia Wei was placed “top seven in the world” for physics. In addition, 26 other students scored 3As or more.

Ding achieved a perfect score of 600/600 in all her unit papers for mathematics. She also scored As in accounting and economics. She was recognised as MCKL’s top student for mathematics and accounting for her cohort.

Chew also had a perfect score of 600/600 for all his physics papers. In addition, he scored As in chemistry, biology and mathematics. Chew was also recognised as MCKL’s top student for both physics and chemistry.

The results are another testimony of the college’s excellent track record in providing quality education to prepare young adults for admission to world-class universities and colleges. MCKL was established as a private college in1983.

Outstanding Scholars
Ding was a former student of SMJK Ave Maria Convent, Ipoh who scored 11As in the 2007 SPM examination. She was admitted to the A-Level programme at MCKL last year on a full merit scholarship. She has always been active in clubs and sports activities and took part in competitions since her secondary school. She continued her active involvement in student and community service activities at MCKL.

Ding appreciates the small classes. This enables lecturers and staff to give personalised attention. Friendships are formed and students give each other support to excel academically and in life.

She said: “Looking back on my one and a half years, I can say its excellence belies its small building and small student population. My lecturers were wonderful teachers who bonded well with students, and Datin Nadarajah has been a great help in university applications. The strong Christian Fellowship (CF) is a unique feature of MCKL. My college experience would not have been as colourful otherwise. I hope those bonds of friendship formed through camp and other CF activities will last the test of time.”

Ding has received admission offers from City University, United Kingdom and Drake University, United States together with the Drake Presidential Scholarship to study Actuarial Science. She has yet to make up her mind.

Chew joined MCKL after finishing his secondary school education at Sri Sempurna Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur where he obtained 13As in the 2007 SPM examination.

He took an active part in extra-curricular activities and was the winner of the 2007 National SPM Bible Knowledge Quiz. He was awarded a full merit scholarship to do his A-Level studies in MCKL.

Chew’s lecturers attribute his success to his diligence and perseverance. From the various admission offers to foreign and local universities, he selected the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia. He is currently reading for his medical degree.

One girl dead, 2 missing, 19 safe after falling into Sg Kampar (Update 7)

By IVAN LOH

KAMPAR: One girl is dead, two pupils are still missing and nineteen have been found safe.

They are the 22 pupils on a camping trip who fell into Sungai Kampar when the suspension bridge they were crossing broke near Kuala Dipang, Kampar, at about 10pm on Monday.

Police divers searching for 2 missing pupils who had fallen off the suspension bridge at Sungai Kampar in Kuala Dipang on Monday night.

The dead girl was identified as Dina Deve Nathan, 11, from SK Tamil Mambang Diawan. Rescuers found her at Kampung Pasir, about 2km downstream from the broken bridge, at about 8.40am Tuesday. Her body was sent to the Kampar Hospital.

Police said twenty other pupils, who were not on the bridge, escaped unscathed.

According to one of the survivors, Mohd Azid Teng, 12, from SKJC Bemban near Kampar, the pupils had had supper at SK Kuala Dipang and were crossing the bridge to get to the camping site when a few of the pupils started jumping and shaking the bridge.

Manpower: Used or Utilized

When I was serving in my division, some of my senior's who are attached to the HQ Division used to gather all the Adult members to help run Area Level activities. I really enjoyed it, as it gave me and my friends experience and exposure. When we were in F4, we were selected as facilitators in a NCO Camp. After my F5 exams, we organized a Trainers Course for all the Adult members and many more area level functions, activities, etc.

They always used to tell me "Fully utilize the manpower that is available". Everyone is useful and nobody is useless. At that time it just got stuck in my mind. And ever since then, when ever I run a program, I will gather all the members from divisions and delegate responsibility. I fully utilize the manpower. It sounds like the members are being USED. You might be thinking that this is wrong. But I always tell my fellow members, you are free to choose. You are not helping me but the organization. Members were empowered and they do the thinking. They are never promised for anything in return. The only thing I promise them is experience.

As for me this is an opportunity to share my experience with them because I know one day I will need to slow down to concentrate in my career and family.

When I was appointed to a higher level, I noticed things changed. Members nowadays are occupied with their studies, extra classes, societies at school, etc. I have to drop the idea of getting assistance from members who are still attached to Divisions in schools. Honestly I sometimes feel the members are more reliable. What they need was proper guidance and they can get anything done. Some people don't believe but I have proved them wrong.

But members nowadays, they don't even have time to run their division activities because they are too busy. Well this is what they (members) say. Let's not just talk about the members/committees, even the divisional officer does have time for the members/their own division!

There are some cases, whereby committees/DO's, don't have time for their own division but have time for the area /state. I am not saying you cannot help but before you help make sure you settle your responsibility at your division level.

There are people out there, who just USED members for their personal gain. After USING them these members are just forgotten and not appreciated or their service being acknowledged. End of the day, these members don't gain anything - knowledge, experience, skills, etc. they are just being USED!

Back to the people who USE members, think carefully before you USE them. The members are innocent. They have no hidden agenda. They just want to help.

UTILIZE and APPRECIATE , Don't USE them!

SJAM Highway Ambulance Service Launching - News Article

24-hour emergency services from St John Ambulance during festive season

2009/08/27

KUALA LUMPUR: St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) will provide a 24-hour emergency ambulance service at various sites along the nation's expressways on Sept 18, 19, 26 and 27 for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

The emergency services were launched today by Genting Malaysia's deputy chairman Tun Haniff Omar at the SJAM headquarters in Cheras here.
SJAM Commander-in-Chief Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick said the services will cover the PLUS North-South Expressway; the Kesas, Elite and NKVE expressways; and federal trunk roads.

He said 2,000 paramedics and 50 ambulances nationwide will be on standby.

"This service is essential because the number of accidents usually rises during festive seasons.

"Moreover, the presence of ambulances shows that an accident has occured and this would definitely arouse awareness among the public to drive more carefully," he said at the launch.

Low said this year they had targeted several "accident prone hot spots" like Gurun in Kedah; Penang; and Batu Pahat and Pontian in Johor.

"We have also stationed our teams at several police stations so that they can respond immediately once the police recieved an emergency call," he added.

Genting Malaysia donated RM60,000 to SJAM which will go towards maintaining ambulances, medical equipment and cost of the medicines for the services rendered during the festive season.

Haniff hoped that the donation would come in handy to SJAM in upgrading their emergency ambulance services.

"While we understand that accidents are unexpected and most unfortunate, we also strongly believe that accident victims should receive all the help they can get. It is indeed dangerous when a victim is left to wait for the ambulance, without receiving proper first aid treatment.

"For this reason, it is vital for the emergency ambulance service to be patrolling on major highways to ensure accident victims are given immediate attention," he added. - BERNAMA
