(Tiada hari tanpa latihan - PULAPOL)
This sentence was on one of the walls in PULAPOL (Pusat Latihan Polis) Police Training Center, Jalan Semarak, KL. It reminded me that, without daily training and for me to continue to improve myself, I will need to train every time so that the knowledge and skills will always be remembered.
Even someone who I highly look upon and respect (The late Tn. Guru) told me this during a OTC in 2001. He reminded me that, to be able to lead others we must train ourselves and training should not stop just because we become an officer. We will need to gain new skills and knowledge so that we will be able to share and lead others. And when we make a mistake, quickly change and learn from that mistake. Yes, I make mistake, I am not perfect.
So what will I do to improve myself and my members?
Apart from all those lectures and talks (I know some are bored hearing my lectures; BUY Original) I would get them the right tool and equipments.
Divisions should consider investing money in Manikin, teaching aids, etc. I have come accross members who don't even know how to open a stretcher. Committee just show the member but don't allow the members to try opening, preparing and how to use a stretcher. Why ? Scared the stretcher get spoilt.
And when comes an emergency, the poor member does not know what to do! It's better to show and allow hand's on, rather then during emergency, they try opening a stretcher and damage it. You might say, stretcher only mah! So easy!
Then there is the Choking Manikin. It is costly, the last time I checked the price it cost about RM 3,200.00 (2007).
This another equipment that will be handy for training purpose.
If your division is loaded or some generous donor would like to donate but don't know what to donate. It will be probably one good idea to invest in a Simulation Manikin
Other equipments probably you can invest on the C-Collar which I mentioned in my previous post.
Maybe I will mention to you in my next posting, other optional product in delivering better service, which is our First Aid Service.
Anyway you can have all the equipments (hardaware), but end of the day having them alone will not improve training and knowledge. You will need to ensure that you have the right software (trainers). Not forgetting responsible people to care for the equipments and proper usage. (Another interesting topic, I should blog about , maintenance!)
